KIOF (Kenya Institute of Organic Farming)
Shortly after graduating in 1989 I travelled to Kenya to work in KIOF. I received training in organic farming practices and worked with the local small holder farmers in the area of Mount Kenya, most of them were women and our work consisted of promoting organic agriculture, participating with the farmers in activities such as: compost making, intercrop planting , elaborating planting calendars for crop rotation, manufacturing organic pesticides and organic soil amendments, terrace building for planting on slopes, building water tanks with local materials for rainwater catchment. The way farmers were organized was very important to accomplish work totally community oriented. Every other week we would meet and agree on the farm where we would work at and if possible, decide the program for the following week. The host farm would offer food and beverage to everybody who came and helped.
